Thinking of island hopping in Cebu? The best ones you should visit
Every traveller has had that dream of sun bathing on a postcard perfect exotic beach with not a worry in the world. Well, thankfully that paradise does exist and there’s a heap of little islands in a region of the Philippines called Cebu where you can do just that.
There, you won’t struggle to find some of the best beaches in the world. Just a brief search on Google images will lead any world wonderer to believe that there’s nothing more enticing than going island hopping in Cebu.
In fact, there are so many treasures to explore, you might have a hard time knowing where to begin.
To ease your planning, here are some of the best places in Cebu you have to put on your island-hopping itinerary:
1/ Malapascua Island
Malapascua is one of the smaller islands in Cebu but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in sea life. The island is known for the abundance of thresher sharks and every year divers from around the world come through just to get a look at these incredible creatures. For the non-divers, the snorkelling on Malapascua is also fantastic.
If getting into the water doesn’t tickle your fancy, there are some stunning beaches for you to lay back on. Bounty beach is a good place to start your sun tan.
2/ Nalusuan Island
Nalusuan is privately owned and is technically a resort island. There are only a handful of cottages that are available for rent but it’s a great pit stop for island hopping. What’s great about Nalusuan is that there is something for everyone. You can snorkel and swim or just relax on the beach. The restaurant is also a fantastic spot to try out the exquisite local cuisine.
3/ Olango Island
Like many islands in Cebu, the snorkelling and swimming on Olango is fantastic but what makes it unique is the bird sanctuary. Olango is known for being one of the best places in the world for seeing migrating birds. After learning about some exotic birds, consider hiring a bike to take a ride around the island.
4/ Mactan Island
There is nothing wrong with spoiling yourself and that’s the kind of attitude Mactan Island caters for. You can expect to find some of the finest resorts in all of the Philippines on Mactan. Leave your stress behind and relax by the pool with a lovely cocktail, get a world class beauty treatment at the sensational spas and if you want a bit of action you can even try out a host of adventure sports which includes:
- Jet skiing
- Scuba diving
Mactan is much more developed than all the other islands in the region so don’t be surprised by the lively nightlife and shopping options available.
5/ Bantayan Island
Bantayan island is home to some of the most unspoilt tropical beaches in the country. It is still relatively unvisited by tourists which makes it more exotic but don’t wait around because it’s quickly becoming discovered year by year. Island hoppers must check out the surrounding islands of Kinatarkan and Virgin, both of which are known for their powder sugar like sand and crystal blue waters. Bantayan is the perfect place to visit for the laid back soul.
Quick fire advice for the adventurous Island Hopper
- Take your time in picking a solid boat
- Leave early to beat the crowd (Between 8am-9am is ideal)
- Use your sunblock generously
- Bring your own food for a beach picnic (Some boatmen will cook your fish for you provided it is allowed on the island)
There are so many islands that cater to every crowd that it’s almost impossible to go to Cebu and not have your mind blown. Whether you are a diver or a beach bummer, you should put Cebu at the top of your travel list if you haven’t already done so.
