Discover Makati’s nightlife in 7 must see clubs and bars
Although Manila continues to be a thriving capital city in South East Asia, it can also be very intimidating for a first-time visitor. The population density coupled with the range of neighbourhoods you can visit makes it particularly difficult to explore the nightlife. Perhaps the best way to get a taste of Manila’s nightlife is by checking out the Makati nightlife.
Situated a mere 20 minutes from the airport, Makati represents the financial hub of Manila but it is also known for its vibrant nightlife as this district boasts some of the best clubs and bars in the city.
Here are 7 must see clubs and bars for you to get the best out of the nightlife in Makati:
- Handlebar Manila
Situated smack bang in this middle of Makati lies this ultra-cool sports bar. While Handlebar is not a typical modern lounge bar that Makati is known to have, it is one of the most authentic bars to soak in Filipino culture. The bar’s main clientele are bikers but it is welcoming to everyone. Enjoy the local sporting culture over a beer and meet some friendly locals or for the active types, there are also billiard tables and live music for you to dance to.
- Nuvo Restaurant and Wine Bar
This modern restaurant and bar is known for its authentic Mediterranean food and selection of music. This is one of the better lounge bars in Makati and a great example of the kind of posh environment you can expect to find in the area. Nuvo is on the upper side with regards to price but it is certainly worth the visit for the classy vibe. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink and chill.
- Mandalay Whisky & Cigars
This tiny bar is hidden away and has a secret entrance which is accessed through a wardrobe. Yeah, that sounds strange but the dramatic entrance also makes it a particularly cool place to check out. You can get there by going through a restaurant pub called The Belle & Dragon. The bar does a good job in recreating a Indo-Chinese speakeasy vibe and you will immediately feel as though you just stumbled upon a secret jazz bar in the 50’s.
- 71 Gramercy
71 Gramercy has become one of the hottest clubs in the city. The club is located on the tallest building in the country (the Gramercy Residences) and you will often spot famous Filipino celebrities roaming about. The bar is fitted with a décor inspired by a New York style and features a bar and lounge, a restaurant, dancefloors and two amazing rooftop decks.
Live music is a huge part of Filipino culture and if you want to get a glimpse of the scene, then hit up Strumms. The place has been around since the 90’s and has garnered enough of a reputation to be a local staple. Most of the live performances are from well known local bands with a particular focus on Jazz.
- The Exit
Like Mandalay, The Exit is another hidden bar in Makati. To get there, you will need to go to Plaza Café, and head through a second exit door at the back. The Exit offers a peaceful, laid back and relaxed lounge bar atmosphere that is a refreshing escape from the typical giant nightclubs in the area. The bar is softly lit to create a more intimate experience and the menu offers a decent range of international beverages.
Okay if you want your big night out in Makati, then you have to hit Royal club. Imagine walking into a large venue filled with dancing Filipinos, massive TV screens, lounge chairs and great music all night long. This is the clubbing experience that will leave you wanting more of Makati and if you have ever wanted to have the VIP club experience, then you have to come to Royal. The DJ’s are consistently good and if you like to dance then this is the spot for you.
