Where are the best snorkeling spots in the Philippines?
With literally thousands of islands to choose from, the Philippines is hands down one of the greatest treasure troves of island hopping any beach bum can have in South East Asia. While laying around on an exotic beach may be your idea of a good time, another fantastic way to make the most of your island escape is to go snorkeling in the Philippines.
Snorkeling is a fantastic way to not only soak in your tropical vacation but to also get intimate with nature and underwater life and there are no better snorkeling places than the ones scattered throughout the thousands of islands called the Philippines.
Here are a few snorkeling places for you to begin your underwater adventure:
1/ Siete Pecados – Coron, Palawan
Siete pecados (which means seven sins) is the most well-known snorkeling spot in Coron. The extent of marine life in the waters is mind blowing and even an experienced snorkeler will appreciate the staggering amount of fish here. Snorkeling in siete pecados is akin to diving into a massive aquarium as you swing amongst colorful fish, baby sharks, octopus and squid. Water visibility is very clear which makes it easy for you see the massive swarm of fish going back and forth.
2/ Apo Island – Dauin, Negros Oriental
The water visibility at Apo Island is some of the best in the country. You will appreciate the gorgeous multi-colored fish that call Apo Island home as you snorkel around the gorgeous rock formations that make up the underwater life. A highlight to keep an eye out for are the stunning sea turtles who have over time warmed up to the various snorkelers who hit the waters every year. As a bonus, the beaches at Apo Island are stunning in themselves and make for a great place to lay around after your snorkeling trip.
3/ Matinloc Island – El Nido, Palawan
When one heads to El Nido, it is expected that one goes island hopping with snorkel in hand to appreciate the breathtaking beaches and unbelievable underwater life. There are islands that are visited purely for snorkeling as they allow you to get up close and intimate with the fish but the highlight of all the islands is hands down Matinloc Island. The sea floor remains relatively close to your feet until about ten meters which makes for a perfect snorkel place.
4/ Tubod Marine Sanctuary, Siquijor
This sanctuary is one of the best snorkeling places in the region and is particularly known for the amazing coral life and large schools of colorful fish. The snorkeling scene here is well developed and easily accessible to all tourists. You will be so overwhelmed by the beauty of the corals that it will be hard to peel your eyes of them and see all the fantastic star fish laying about.
5/ Nalusuan Island – Cordova, Cebu
Snorkel lovers will fall in love fast at Nalusuan island. Thanks to years of snorkelers coming back to Nalusuan, these days it is a well established snorkeling spot and one of the most visited places for snorkelers on the circuit. It’s so popular that it was designated a Marine Sanctuary years ago. These days snorkeling experts come here to see the wide range of big and little fish as well as the huge selection of corals both small and large.
